The World Bank's mission is to end extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity sustainably. It does this by providing financial aid (like loans and grants) and expert advice to developing countries. The focus is on building strong economies through projects in education, health, infrastructure, and sustainable agriculture, aiming to reduce inequality and improve living standards.
So, how do we get this done? It's about more than just money. We provide a blend of financial solutions—from low-interest loans and interest-free credits to grants—along with expert technical advice. We work side-by-side with countries to design and implement large-scale projects that tackle poverty from all angles. This could mean helping a country build resilient infrastructure like roads and power grids, strengthening their healthcare and education systems, or investing in sustainable agriculture to improve food security.
The World Bank Group currently campiagns on five main priorities: job creation, health care, electricity for Africa, securing agribusinesses, and accelerating gender equality.
The World Bank works to end extreme poverty and help everyone share in a country's growth, while keeping the planet healthy. We have two big goals: reduce the number of people living in extreme poverty to less than 3% worldwide and help the poorest 40% of people in every country earn more money.
We don’t just give money. We mix funding with expert advice and teamwork with countries. This means we provide:
Low-cost loans and grants to build things like roads, schools, and hospitals.
Expert ideas to solve each country’s specific problems.
Partnerships with governments, businesses, and communities to make projects work.
Our projects focus on important areas like:
Building strong roads, bridges, and power systems.
Improving healthcare and schools.
Supporting farming that’s good for the environment.
We’ve dealt with big problems like wars, diseases, and climate change. When crises hit, we quickly provide emergency funds. We also listen to what people need and change our plans to include things like fighting climate change and making sure men and women are treated equally.
The World Bank is unique because we combine:
Public funding to help governments with long-term projects.
Private investment to support businesses and bring in more money.
Global knowledge to share ideas that help countries grow.
We’re not just a bank—we’re a team working to make the world better, fairer, and more sustainable for everyone.
In the first half of Fiscal Year 2024 (July–December 2023), the World Bank made a big impact:
