AB’s Trade-War Thought Leadership Pivot Leads the Conversation

Objective

When sweeping tariff announcements triggered market volatility in April 2025, investors faced a rapidly changing environment shaped by economic uncertainty, geopolitical tension and shifting expectations for global growth. AllianceBernstein recognized the need to provide timely, actionable guidance that could help clients interpret developments as they unfolded.

The objective of the Trade Wars initiative was to create a coordinated thought leadership campaign capable of delivering expert analysis at the pace of the news cycle. The team sought to provide investors with clear perspectives on the implications of trade policy changes across regions, asset classes and market sectors while creating a centralized destination for ongoing coverage. By combining investment expertise, global distribution and multiple content formats, the initiative aimed to help clients navigate uncertainty while reinforcing AB's position as a trusted source of market insight.

Strategy

The Trade Wars initiative was built around a newsroom-style operating model designed to respond quickly to major market developments.

As tariff announcements accelerated and markets reacted, AB assembled a cross-functional team of investment professionals, writers, marketers and business-development leaders to create and distribute timely analysis. Economists, strategists, regional experts and portfolio managers contributed perspectives that examined the implications of trade policy from multiple angles, helping investors move beyond headlines and understand potential portfolio impacts.

The campaign leveraged a broad content ecosystem that included articles, videos, podcasts, infographics and social media content. To improve discoverability and create a cohesive audience experience, AB launched a dedicated Trade Wars content hub supported by a topic tag that connected related insights across the firm's digital channels.

Content was distributed globally and translated into six languages, enabling audiences across regions to access timely information in relevant formats. Social promotion, targeted distribution and coordinated editorial planning ensured that new insights reached investors while market developments remained top of mind.

Rather than functioning as a series of isolated updates, the initiative evolved into a continuously expanding campaign that provided context, education and analysis throughout a prolonged period of market uncertainty.

Results

Trade Wars became one of AB's most successful thought leadership campaigns of 2025.

Over the course of the year, the team produced 50 Trade Wars insights, including 12 published during April alone as markets reacted to the initial tariff announcements. The campaign generated nearly twice the median per-page traffic of other AB insights published during the year and accounted for approximately 30% of all insights traffic despite representing only 23% of total published insights.

The dedicated content hub improved discoverability while the campaign's multi-format approach allowed audiences to engage through articles, podcasts, videos and social content. The combination of speed, depth and coordinated distribution helped investors navigate one of the year's most significant market events while strengthening engagement with AB's research and expertise.

The success of the initiative demonstrated the value of combining editorial agility, investment expertise and integrated digital distribution to deliver meaningful guidance during periods of elevated uncertainty.
