IBM TechXchange is built for people who do more than talk about technology. Developers, engineers, architects, data experts and other practitioners come together to build with real code, experiment with emerging tools and develop skills they can put to work.
Our objective was to capture the scale and impact of that experience and make it understandable to an audience beyond the people in the room.
Across TechXchange, attendees could explore the latest AI developer tooling, experiment with quantum computing, work hands-on with Infrastructure as Code, contribute to open-source projects, participate in labs and coding sessions, connect directly with technical experts and earn professional certifications.
From the beginning, we planned this as a major post-event story rather than a traditional highlight reel. We wanted to show what thousands of those individual experiences added up to.
The challenge was taking an event covering AI, automation, cloud, infrastructure, data, security, quantum computing and more, and finding the human story within it.
Our goal was to show technology in action: people learning it, testing it, building with it and sharing what they know with others, then extend that experience beyond the four days of TechXchange itself.
Capturing TechXchange meant planning the final story long before the conference began.
Working alongside IBM and Somnio, we identified the technical experiences, people, environments and key moments we wanted to capture throughout the event. Rather than treating the post-event film as something to assemble afterward, we built the coverage strategy around the story from the start.
That planning was essential because TechXchange is an extremely active technology environment. Developers and technologists were writing code, experimenting with AI tools, working through hands-on labs, exploring automation and infrastructure, participating in demonstrations, earning certifications and engaging directly with technical experts. At the same time, keynotes, product announcements, community programming and partner experiences were happening across a large conference footprint.
To capture that scale, Vibrant coordinated a production team of more than 30 people across multiple crews and specialties. Different units could operate simultaneously while still working toward the same visual and editorial goals. Coverage included major stages, technical sessions, hands-on environments, partner activations, interviews, behind-the-scenes moments and the smaller interactions that gave the event its personality.
Across the larger production, more than 100 interviews were captured, giving IBM perspectives from developers, technical experts, IBM Champions, partners and community members.
The challenge was not simply capturing enough footage. It was making sure a production this large was capturing the right footage.
That required detailed pre-production, clear communication between teams and a shared understanding of the larger story, while still giving crews enough flexibility to react to unscripted moments as they happened.
We intentionally captured both scale and detail. A packed keynote could establish the magnitude of TechXchange, then cut to an individual developer working through code at a workstation. A major technology announcement could be followed by people testing, discussing or applying that technology themselves.
In post-production, we avoided a chronological event recap. Instead, the film was structured around what attendees were actually doing: exploring, learning, building, experimenting, sharing knowledge and connecting.
The finished work was highly successful with IBM and its partners because it captured TechXchange in a way that felt both technically rich and human. It gave the client a polished, high-level representation of the event while preserving the hands-on energy and participation that made the experience unique.
Our job was to take an enormous amount of technology, activity and production complexity and turn it into one clear, cohesive story.
The finished film gave IBM something it had not created for TechXchange before: a high-level story that captured not only the scale of the event, but the impact of what was happening inside it.
More than 7,900 attendees took part in over 1,500 sessions, completing more than 80,000 hours of training and earning more than 750 certifications. The film gave those numbers context by showing the people behind them: developers building with real tools, attendees working through hands-on experiences, technical experts sharing knowledge and a global community learning together.
The response from IBM leadership and its partners was extremely strong. The film stood out because it moved beyond the traditional event recap format and created a more meaningful, lasting representation of TechXchange and the value it delivers.
For our team, that was the clearest measure of success. We set out to create something IBM had never done for the event before, and the final piece became a new way to communicate the scale, energy and technical depth of TechXchange.
It extended the impact of the event beyond the venue and gave IBM a film that could continue representing the experience long after the conference ended.
