Re-awakening the American Spirit

Entered in Multi-Platform Campaign

Objective

Re-awakening the American Spirit was created to show what the American spirit looks like in the lives of College of the Ozarks students and alumni. At its heart, the campaign connects the American dream to the College's mission of providing students with a debt-free education through its Work Education Program, equipping them to build meaningful careers, serve their communities, and pursue lives of purpose. Rather than positioning the American spirit solely around patriotism, the campaign explored the values that have long shaped the College's mission: hard work, faith, opportunity, responsibility, perseverance, and service. Through student and alumni stories, historical moments, campus traditions, and educational content, the campaign invited audiences to consider what is possible when young people are given the opportunity to work hard, receive an education without debt, and use that opportunity to make a difference. Launched as part of the College's America250 initiative, the campaign also connected the College's nearly 120-year history and mission to the nation's 250th anniversary. The goal was to make the idea of the American spirit tangible and personal — not simply something to celebrate, but something students can live out.

Strategy

The campaign began with a specific opportunity: College of the Ozarks' president was invited to present at a national event attended by prominent leaders and stakeholders. The College needed a compelling way to communicate its story beyond campus and inspire others to see the significance of its mission. That opportunity shaped the strategy: create one strong, emotionally resonant story that could serve as the foundation for a larger campaign. The flagship Re-awakening the American Spirit video became that foundation. Produced in partnership with Rudolph Video, the 2:25 direct-to-camera piece featured President Dr. Brad S. Johnson alongside a current criminal justice major and an alumnus now serving as an assistant principal. Rather than simply explaining the College's mission, the video demonstrated its impact through two generations of students and alumni. The team then extended the story across multiple formats. A dedicated campaign microsite placed the video at its center, while a physical campaign booklet provided a tangible extension of the campaign. Ozark Visitor magazine features offered additional storytelling opportunities, and a podcast interview series allowed the College to explore campaign themes through longer-form conversations. Social content across Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn carried the campaign into the College's daily digital storytelling through native video, custom graphics, and educational content. A short-form cut of the flagship video became the campaign's top-performing social post. The central executional challenge was maintaining a consistent creative and editorial thread across a national keynote video, four social platforms, a microsite, podcast interviews, print materials, and an outside production partner. Each piece was designed to reinforce the same central story rather than function as a standalone communication, allowing the campaign to build recognition and momentum across channels.

Results

Across Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn, the campaign generated 17 posts and drove a blended engagement rate of 6.00% — well above typical higher-education social benchmarks (generally 1–3%). It reached a combined audience of roughly 143,000 followers, added 777 net new followers during the campaign window, and produced approximately 49,100 impressions, roughly 2,000 reactions, and 25 comments. Results varied meaningfully by platform: Instagram drove the strongest follower growth (net +242) at an 8.16% engagement rate; LinkedIn posted the highest engagement rate of any channel at 10.63%; and Facebook delivered the greatest raw reach, with its top post ("The American spirit begins with faith...") alone generating 418 reactions and 16,200 impressions. The Instagram Reel of the campaign video was the single top-performing piece of content across the entire campaign, at a 9.16% engagement rate. Beyond social, the campaign is anchored by the dedicated microsite and the flagship video, both of which extended its reach past native platforms and gave the campaign a lasting home beyond the life of any single post. Taken together, the results met the campaign's objective: a foundational institutional value was translated into content that audiences actually engaged with, shared, and discussed, at engagement rates that outperformed sector norms across every channel it ran on.
