Shifting Cultivation of Aromatic Plants: Seeing Nature Beyond Ingredients

Entered in Fashion & Beauty

Objective

Created by DAISY SKY, Shifting Cultivation of Aromatic Plants is an ongoing documentary-led project exploring how aromatic plants and people shape one another.

An aromatic plant is more than the scent, flavor, or ingredient we take from it. It has a life, a history, and relationships of its own.

Across two seasons and six episodes, the series follows plants through their growth, migration, and use, revealing connections with land, livelihoods, history, and culture. Rather than treating plants only as useful ingredients, it approaches them as living beings worthy of sustained attention.

A companion publication, small-scale screenings and public discussions extend the project beyond viewing. Its purpose is to make the relationships between plants and people more visible—and invite audiences to reconsider how they encounter nature in everyday life.

Shifting Cultivation of Aromatic Plants was driven by a core idea: to decenter the human narrative and view the world through plants' evolutionary perspective. Moving far beyond traditional commercial branded films, our mission was to create an enduring botanical anthropology project that treats flora as active protagonists shaping ecosystems, cultures, and human history.

Season 2, our specific goals were:

  1. De-commodify Nature: Shift public perception from consuming plants to understanding their ecological autonomy, migration, and survival strategies across shifting climates.
  2. Document Eastern Botanical Heritage: Immerse audiences in the natural habitats of three iconic Eastern species—Schisandra chinensis (五味子), Jasmine (茉莉), and Angelica sinensis (当归)—tracing the fragile balance between wild regeneration and traditional community stewardship across China, the US, and Southeast Asia.
  3. Practice Radical Brand Restraint: Eliminate all product placements, commercial endorsements, and sales funnels. Instead, position the brand as an altruistic ecological observer, fostering genuine environmental empathy and cross-cultural dialogue on biodiversity and sustainable farming practices.

Strategy

Bringing Shifting Cultivation of Aromatic Plants: Season 2 (3 episodes, 117m 26s total) to life required an anti-formulaic filmmaking methodology: "Rigorous archival research first, multi-season field immersion second, narrative emergence last."

Execution & Episode Architecture:
Over an arduous 18-month production timeline, director-cinematographer JK Lou led an agile crew across 2 countries and 9 distinct regions, letting biological lifecycles dictate production schedules rather than rigid call sheets:

Challenges Overcome:
The paramount challenge was absolute ecological unpredictability. Unlike conventional scripted content, authentic botanical documentary filmmaking offers no second takes:

What Makes the Work Unique:

  1. Radical Non-Anthropocentric Stance: The camera operates at the eye level of vines, roots, and petals. Plants are not passive scenery; they possess agency, sensory history, and geographical mobility.
  2. Radical Brand Invisibility: DAISY SKY enforced zero commercial branding, logos, or product references, presenting the project purely as independent non-fiction cinema.
  3. Transmedia Cultural Resonance: Rather than relying solely on online video algorithms, the project was released synergistically across Tencent Video and Bilibili, accompanied by a published botanical book and an official Beijing offline premiere co-hosted with China’s premier cultural institution, Sanlian Lifeweek. This created a multi-layered intellectual forum connecting botanists, filmmakers, and the public.

Results

Quantitative Reach & Engagement: Season Two delivered three documentary films totaling 117 minutes and 26 seconds, released on Bilibili and Tencent Video on July 28, 2026. (bilibili.com) Achieved over 3.8 million organic streams across Tencent Video and Bilibili within weeks of release, propelling the overall series past 14 million cumulative impressions.

Critical & Institutional Acclaim: The series expanded upon Season 1's international prestige—where the Indian Sandalwood episode was officially selected for the Jackson Wild 2026 World Wildlife Day Film Showcase (partnered with CITES and the UN Environment Program).

Engagement extended beyond streaming. The Beijing premiere paired viewing with an in-person discussion, while the Stochastic Volatility collaboration offered an audio exploration of plants, sensory memory and everyday life. (lifeweek.com.cn)

Audience feedback collected by DAISY SKY provided qualitative signs that the approach resonated. Viewers recalled jasmine in Hengzhou, danggui’s long growth cycle and schisandra surviving winter. Some reported sharing the films with parents or friends, taking the stories into their own relationships. (weibo.com)

Transformative Cultural Impact: Most importantly, Shifting Cultivation of Aromatic Plants helped transform public consciousness. Comment sections and media discourse shifted from functional ingredient consumption toward biodiversity loss, traditional foraging ethics, and climate resilience. By prioritizing long-term botanical preservation over short-term commercial gains, DAISY SKY set a new gold standard for corporate environmental stewardship, showing that branded cultural investment can meaningfully restore humanity’s reverence for the natural world.
