Verity: Responsible AI for News — and a Generation Trained to Read It

Entered in News & Media, Responsible Technology

Objective

Trust in news has fallen as platforms reward speed and partisan framing, and readers have few tools for seeing the underlying facts next to the competing interpretations.

Verity launched in 2023 to make that range visible. Each day, machine-learning systems cluster coverage from over 5,000 traditional and alternative sources. The systems draft a first pass that separates corroborated facts from the strongest arguments on each side. Human editors review every story before publication. Our core values are simple: AI can map a media ecosystem, but it cannot be allowed to publish, and it cannot collapse disagreement into a single “official” line.

In September 2025, we expanded those values to pair with a public-literacy mission and launched the Verity Media Lab, a three-month program for undergraduates, recent graduates, and early-career professionals. Too many young professionals consume news inside algorithmic feeds without practice in narrative analysis. Weekly sessions would train participants to evaluate framing, track how stories travel across platforms, and practice digital engagement with an emphasis on Reddit, where Verity has built a strong, active readership.

We set two targets for ourselves in 2025: 1 million website page views by the end of 2025, and to launch the Verity Media Lab as a pathway that spreads media literacy while extending Verity’s reporting into the communities where narratives actually move.

Success would mean more than traffic and organic views: the same habit on the site and in the lab—facts first, interpretations in view—and an independent test of whether that page still reads as balanced.

Strategy

Our editorial process was built around a constraint: models may cluster and draft, but not publish. Before a fact enters a story, it must survive multi-source verification, and competing perspectives must be present. Every story is edited by people who can reject the machine draft.

That rule shaped three main reader tools:

We share these stories on platforms where interpretation moves fastest, such as X, Facebook, and especially Reddit, the most self-governing and least advertiser-friendly environment on the internet. Reddit was a teaching environment, not a traffic tap, and the Verity Media Lab turned that into a curriculum.

The first cohort launched in September 2025, focused on media-ecosystem basics, narrative analysis, public sentiment, and platform-specific engagement. The exercise was simple: hold a story next to its variants and say what is fact, what is narrative framing, and what is missing. On Reddit, participants placed the same Verity story into ideologically opposed communities, from r/Conservative to r/anticapitalism, then analyzed the response. Same verified facts, two completely different receptions.

The program was kept small, and then extended into 2026 spring, summer, and soon a fall cohort.

Two risks were treated as design problems. The first was automated bias: a model trained on a lopsided source pool can tilt “neutrality.” To counter, we implemented mandatory multi-source verification and narrative diversity for each story, and a human veto to ensure these measures were followed.

The second was the empty “community.” A volunteer program that only asks people to promote the brand teaches marketing, not literacy, so the mission was inverted. Volunteers learn the method first; sharing Verity became a byproduct of being able to explain how a narrative was built.

A third risk showed up in practice. A 17-item survey of the 22-person 2026 summer cohort made the platform cost of Reddit visible. 91% hit platform enforcement, while 41% were permanently banned. When asked what limited their reach, 60% of answers named account standing and automated filters. Interns were accused of being AI bots, and Verity dismissed outright as AI-generated. Building AI responsibly, we learned, does not by itself buy public trust in it.

The lesson was operational, not rhetorical. Karma-building now comes before posting, with a participation target instead of a quota. Cadence is capped per subreddit, and multi-platform is the default rather than the fallback.

What the public sees is a site and a feed. What the team built is a loop: thousands of sources in, clustered claims out, human judgment on the record, and a volunteer bench that has now felt—sometimes by getting shut out—how a true story can still fail as a social object.

Results

Verity's responsible-AI model has now reached significant global scale.

From August 2023 through August 31, 2026, Verity attracted 1.8 million site visitors and generated 3.2 million pageviews, with readers spending an average of 6 minutes and 44 seconds on the verity.news platform.

That audience is international. Verity has reached approximately 1 million website visitors in the United States, alongside 144,300 in the United Kingdom, 86,900 in China, 82,400 in Canada, and 65,000 in Hong Kong.

But the most important expansion happened beyond the product itself.

In September 2025, the principles behind Verity's responsible-AI newsroom became the curriculum for the Verity Media Lab.

From September 2025 through August 2026, Verity Media Lab participants generated 7,427,876 organic Reddit views while learning to distinguish verified information from narrative framing and understand how the same news behaves across communities with radically different perspectives.

The program grew across three cohorts. Fall 2025 generated 1.7 million Reddit views. Seven Spring 2026 volunteers generated 2.7 million views, followed by 2.9 million views from 22 Summer 2026 volunteers.

In the largest cohort, 22 of 29 participants completed the program, while demand for the upcoming Fall 2026 cohort reached 49 applicants. Returning participants also began becoming mentors, turning the program from a one-time educational experience into a developing leadership pipeline.

The scale extends beyond the Lab.

From 2022 through August 2026, Verity's main Reddit distribution generated 38,479,400 organic views. Media Lab participants contributed another 7,427,876, bringing the combined total to 45,907,276 organic Reddit views.

The numbers demonstrate reach. The behavior demonstrates impact.

Participants were not simply taught how to distribute journalism. They were taught to interrogate it: identify what is verified, distinguish facts from interpretation, recognize framing, compare competing narratives, and understand why different communities respond differently to the same information.

And the communities pushed back.

In a survey of the 22-person Summer 2026 cohort, 91% reported encountering platform enforcement and 41% experienced a permanent account ban. When asked what limited their reach, 60% of responses cited account standing or automated platform filters.

That resistance became part of the curriculum.

Participants learned that responsible AI does not automatically produce public trust. They began prioritizing genuine community participation, building credibility before distribution, reducing posting cadence, and engaging with people before asking them to read.

As participant Daijah Scott put it:

"It feels like I am educating the public rather than persuading."

And Ganna Zgama:

"Instead of giving up, I started spending more time interacting with people, commenting on discussions, and building trust before sharing news articles."

The first chapter of Verity proved that AI can help journalists analyze the information ecosystem without replacing human editorial judgment.

The Verity Media Lab is the next chapter: teaching a generation how to navigate that information ecosystem for themselves.

After 1.8 million website visitors, 3.2 million pageviews, 45.9 million organic Reddit views, 7.4 million Media Lab views, and growing demand for the program, the impact extends beyond building a more responsible news product.

We are building more responsible news readers.
