AARP’s Real People, Real Stories series celebrates individuals whose experiences inspire others to live fuller, more connected lives. For this episode, we profiled The Old Gays—a group of LGBTQ+ friends whose viral social media presence has attracted millions of followers across generations through humor, honesty, and unapologetic authenticity.
Our objective was to look beyond their internet fame and reveal the deeper story behind their social-media influence. While audiences know The Old Gays for their lighthearted dance videos and comedic content, their true impact comes from sharing decades of lived experience as gay men who navigated discrimination, the AIDS crisis, coming out later in life, and the challenges of aging. Their willingness to openly discuss both joy and hardship has created a powerful sense of connection for followers of all ages.
As an organization dedicated to helping people age with dignity, purpose, and community, AARP saw an opportunity to highlight themes that resonate deeply with our audience: the importance of friendship, social connection, self-acceptance, and lifelong growth. We also recognized the importance of uplifting the older LGBTQ+ community, an often overlooked group whose stories embody resilience and the ongoing fight for equality.
By centering The Old Gays’ voices, the project aimed to celebrate LGBTQ+ visibility, combat ageism, and honor the generations who paved the way for today’s progress. Ultimately, the video sought to affirm that LGBTQ+ identity, joy, and community thrive at every age, inspiring viewers to embrace who they are and strengthen their own connections.
For this video, our strategy was to move beyond the viral clips that made The Old Gays famous and create a more intimate portrait of the people behind the social media phenomenon. Rather than focusing solely on their popularity, we centered the story on the values that have made them resonate with millions: friendship, resilience, humor, and authenticity. As part of AARP’s Real People, Real Stories series, we also followed our signature storytelling framework, opening with immediate impact text to signal the theme and significance of the story, and guiding viewers into the lives of extraordinary people whose experiences reflect broader cultural truths.
AARP Studios coordinated an on-location production in California, bringing together the members of the group for a day of filming. Because their story is fundamentally about community, we made the creative decision to interview them collectively rather than individually. This allowed the men to naturally interact, build upon one another’s memories, and recreate the warmth and camaraderie that audiences experience in their online content. This group‑based approach also underscored the importance of chosen family, a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ life.
The interview was structured around shared themes, in addition to examples from their individual biographies. Conversations explored their experiences coming out, the evolution of LGBTQ+ visibility, surviving the AIDS crisis, living with HIV, finding chosen family, and the unexpected impact of becoming social media influencers later in life. In keeping with the Real People, Real Stories format, we highlighted a pivotal “life‑changing moment, ”their decision to start making TikTok videos, and then traced how that moment led to wider cultural impact, particularly their role in educating and uplifting younger LGBTQ+ generations. Interwoven with these reflections were clips of their playful dances, jokes, and viral moments, creating a balance between entertainment and emotional depth.
One of the primary challenges was condensing five compelling life stories into a concise, engaging short-form documentary. The group’s collective experiences span decades of social change, personal triumphs, and profound loss. Our editorial approach focused on identifying the universal themes that would resonate most broadly with audiences while ensuring each member’s voice remained present. We also worked carefully to present their stories with sensitivity, honoring both the trauma they endured and the joy, liberation, and pride they embody today.
What makes this project unique is its perspective on aging and LGBTQ+ representation. The Old Gays belong to a generation that grew up when openly living as a gay person was far less accepted and often dangerous. Today, they have transformed those experiences into a platform that educates, entertains, and inspires millions. By pairing candid conversations with their signature humor, the video uplifts older LGBTQ+ community members, combats ageism, and celebrates living life authentically across generations, demonstrating that visibility, pride, and community remain powerful at every age.
This video project successfully achieved its goal of introducing audiences to the people behind The Old Gays’ viral success while highlighting the enduring value of friendship, authenticity, LGBTQ+ visibility, and graceful aging.
In the first half-year of publishing, the episode generated more than 79,000 video views and nearly 3,600 engagements, demonstrating strong audience interest in both the group’s story and the broader themes explored in the video. The content earned 14,441 views and 808 engagements on Facebook, along with 65,300 views and 2,779 reactions and comments on Instagram. Additionally, it was shared widely across both platforms.
Audience responses reflected meaningful emotional impact. By revealing the personal histories behind a beloved social media phenomenon, the video succeeded in encouraging viewers to see aging through a more positive lens while celebrating the power of visibility, community, and human connection. Audiences embraced the universal themes of belonging and friendship, and viewers connected with the group’s message of joyful aging through social connection.
