Expedition Iceland

Entered in Travel & Tourism

Objective

AI-generated imagery has reshaped online perception. Real travel photography is increasingly labelled “fake” if it looks too spectacular. Iceland, with (un?)real scenery, volcanic eruptions and Northern Lights, became a frequent example of this scepticism. We were asked to respond to a digital culture where feeds train us to distrust beauty, and reality must compete with simulation. We needed to reassert Iceland’s authenticity in a feed saturated with synthetic beauty.

Strategy

In a culture trained to mistrust anything that looks “too perfect,” proof feels defensive. We dramatised the doubt. A conspiracy bro, his rational sister and an unpredictable third companion travel through Iceland searching for evidence that it’s AI-generated. The film mirrors social content in tone and rhythm: fast cuts, escalating beats, meme-aware dialogue and deliberate ambiguity. Instead of disproving misinformation, the narrative lets scepticism and sarcasm unravel on screen... reclaiming authenticity through entertainment, not persuasion.

The campaign launched with a hero film designed for social feeds, supported by a short-form conspiracy film, carousel content, and snippets of social stills and film. Distribution combined paid social, organic community engagement, and PR amplification.

Results

The campaign sparked debate far beyond travel audiences, generating discussion about AI, truth, and reality itself. Users debated the premise on Reddit, created memes across social media, and shared the content organically. Expedition Iceland demonstrates how brands can engage with modern culture without chasing trends. By leaning into humour, character, and platform-native storytelling, Icelandair reclaimed authenticity in a culture- and social-first way.
