The Remedy Podcast

Entered in Health & Wellness Podcast

Objective

NYC Health + Hospitals is the nation’s largest municipal health system serving over 1 million New Yorkers every year in more than 70 patient care locations across the city’s five boroughs. We care for all New Yorkers. No Exceptions.

In 2024, NYC Health + Hospitals launched The Remedy Podcast to raise awareness of the innovative public health programs that keep New Yorkers healthy. For Season 2, The Remedy decided to focus on frontline health care workers and other staff making an impact beyond the traditional hospital walls, the people doing hands-on work out in the NYC’s vibrant, diverse communities.

Although much incredible care is provided inside the city’s public hospitals and neighborhood health clinics, we wanted to meet the doctors, nurses and social workers that are changing lives out on New York City streets. The goal was to highlight these unsung workers and promote these unique services to potential patients in need.

Strategy

NYC Health + Hospitals partners with Amaze Media Labs to produce The Remedy, transforming a conference room in the health system’s lower Manhattan headquarters into a podcast studio. For the second season, The Remedy added a video component to the audio interview.

The Remedy host is Dr. Michael Shen, Medical Director of Adult Primary Care and Geriatrics at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull in Brooklyn. In addition to the advantage of Dr. Shen being a doctor in one of the city’s public hospitals, he also has prior experience in podcast production.

The Episode topics for Season 2 covered a wide range of city health issues from Gun Violence to Immigrant Health to Addiction. One episode focused on Community Health Workers who discussed how they bridge gaps in care, which sometimes means taking patients to appointments or helping them pay their rent.

One powerful episode focused on Hospital Violence Intervention Programs with Dr. Rob Gore who discussed emotional conversations in the ER with gun violence victims and their families. Another fascinating episode went on-site to the NYC’s Arrival Center at the Roosevelt Hotel to learn the critical role of health workers in providing support to asylum seekers, from trauma care to family reunification. One of the most popular episodes focused on how addiction services are being reimagined by integrating treatment into every facet of care from the ED to primary care to support during pregnancy.

To promote the Remedy podcast, we posted messages and reels on NYC Health + Hospitals Social Media platforms and promoted through our Internal Communications platforms including the intranet and a weekly e-newsletter.
