Light pollution has made the Milky Way invisible to more than 80% of Americans, creating renewed interest in destinations where travelers can still experience true darkness. With “noctourism” named a top 2025 trend by Booking.com, Travel Nevada identified a clear opportunity to elevate the Silver State as a world-class dark sky destination.
The campaign established two objectives:
To tell this story in a way that felt credible and compelling, Travel Nevada partnered with Alexandra Doten (Astro Alexandra), a former NASA and U.S. Space Force science communicator, whose blend of expertise and approachability demystifies the cosmos.
Research showed strong consumer interest in restorative, nature-driven travel and a lack of awareness around Nevada’s dark sky resources, including Great Basin National Park, one of the few Gold-Tier International Dark Sky Parks (Leger 2025 Travel Trends). Alexandra’s scientific credibility positioned her to tell Nevada’s dark sky story with authority. The team aligned the launch with International Dark Sky Week to tap into a cultural moment, then deepened engagement through immersive on-the-ground content. The total investment, $26,058.19, included creator compensation and travel.
Success metrics were set prior to activation: 1M impressions and 100K engagements, prioritizing high-value actions, such as shares, saves, and comments that indicate travel inspiration and intent.
The activation rolled out in two phases:
Alexandra shared her experience through Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts, as well as a feature blog on TravelNevada.com, combining short-form social storytelling with long-form content to reach audiences across multiple platforms and deepen engagement. Across five posts and 19 stories, she brought her 4.6M followers along on the adventure.
The campaign exceeded all expectations and delivered clear, measurable impact: 4,849,882 impressions (nearly 5× goal), 515,088 engagements (5× goal), $303,377.60 calculated social media value, 12:1 ROI.
Audience responses reflected strong shifts in perception and intent, with thousands of comments expressing surprise (“I didn’t know Nevada looked like this”) and adding Great Basin National Park to future travel plans. The campaign generated 56,508 shares and 41,920 saves, showing that audiences were actively engaging with, bookmarking, and spreading the content. The content also reached influential voices organically, including Dr. Sian Proctor, the first African-American woman to pilot a spaceship, who expressed interest in visiting.
Outcome: The activation exceeded all objectives, demonstrating how high-trust, expert-driven influencer storytelling elevated a lesser-known asset, reshaped traveler perceptions, and drove meaningful interest in Nevada as a dark sky destination.
