After half a decade providing political commentary and legal insight primarily on her YouTube podcast Why, America? Leeja Miller has become one of the leading voices in leftist political commentary. Using her knowledge of law, history, and politics, along with a dry, sardonic wit, Leeja is on a mission to bring the information to the people, one headline at a time. She provides context that the headlines miss, ensuring her viewers and listeners understand what’s really going on behind the latest political scandals.
Leeja's journey to the creation of Why, America? started in the summer of 2020. Her final year of law school had been cut short by COVID, she had just graduated from the hardest 3 year program of her life via a lackluster Zoom ceremony in the height of a global pandemic and she found herself studying for the Bar Exam in Minneapolis during the George Floyd uprisings. If her legal career up to that point had taught her anything, it was that the law was extremely inaccessible for most. She was about to enter a stuffy private law firm, having achieved the pinnacle of success for a law graduate: the coveted Big Law job, yet she felt she needed to do something bigger, to make a difference. While still living in her mother's basement, a broke recent law school graduate trying to quarantine during a pandemic, she set up a make-shift studio, grabbed the camera gear she still had lying around from her failed attempt at a photography career before law school, and started working nights and weekends on creating videos for her brand new YouTube channel. By day, she was an intellectual property attorney in a stuffy legal office, but she quickly reaslized that her true passion was bringing information and legal analysis to people in an accessible, empowering way. By the summer of 2021, she had quit her corporate law job and dedicated herself full time to bringing information to the people.
In the 5 1/2 years since Leeja started her journey as a creator and commentator, she has amassed nearly 700,000 subscribers on YouTube and over 70 million views of her videos. In 2025, one of her most popular videos, "The Big, Beautiful Bill, Explained" garnered 600,000 views and provided a detailed analysis of the contents of a major spending bill in Congress--something a lot of people probably wouldn't pay much attention to. Reaching over half a million people and explaining a piece of major legislation to them is clear fulfillment of the initial objective of bringing the law and legal information to the people. Leeja has also received countless comments from people saying things like "you're the reason I decided to go to law school" or "I watch you with my mom and we have really productive conversations and it has really helped her understand politis better." Beyond just bringing people information and education, Leeja's work is changing peoples' lives and helping form the political conversations happening around dinner tables across the United States. That is a success beyond what she could have dreamed up when Leeja began this project back in that basement studio over 5 years ago.
