Objective

In 2023, Al Jazeera's local channels on Facebook emerged as vital platforms for delivering accurate and engaging news coverage. Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to staying abreast of global events, we provided comprehensive updates, focusing on urgent developments and real-life stories from the field.

Throughout the year, our coverage spanned significant milestones across the globe. From protests against judicial reform in Israel to escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington, and the Kahramanmaraş earthquake in Turkey and Syria, we ensured our audience remained informed about key events shaping geopolitics and society.

Our Digital Newsroom/ DNR’s local team at Al Jazeera comprises 19 dedicated local pages, each focused on providing comprehensive coverage of events and humanitarian stories from specific regions around the world. From Europe to Yemen, our specialized team works tirelessly to stay updated on the latest developments, ensuring our audience receives timely and accurate news updates.

In 2023, our efforts yielded remarkable results, with a total of 14.2 billion views across all 19 local pages. This extensive viewership led to 1.1 billion interactions, the acquisition of 17.34 million new followers, and an estimated 49 million viewers worldwide. Notably, Al Jazeera's local news platforms ranked #1 worldwide in publisher performance during the final quarter of 2023, according to Tubular Labs' classification.

We reported on diplomatic maneuvers in China, mass demonstrations in France, and provided insights into the observance of Ramadan worldwide. In May, we covered the Turkish presidential elections, followed by the coronation of Charles III in Britain and the military uprising in Russia led by Yevgeny Prigozhin's Wagner Group in June.

In July, our focus shifted to Russia's conflict with Ukraine, while August saw our coverage of the global heatwave and its perilous consequences. September brought attention to the earthquake in Morocco's Al-Hawz region and the flood-related humanitarian crisis in Libya's Derna.

However, it was in October that our commitment to truth and accuracy was truly tested during the Israeli war on Gaza. Despite facing multiple challenges and threats, including targeted attacks on our local staff resulting in loss of lives and limbs, our team remained steadfast in delivering timely and reliable news coverage. Their dedication ensured that our audience stayed informed about the events shaping our world, even in the face of adversity.
