Objective

Hulu Original "History of the World, Part II" is an outrageous sketch comedy series that recreates different historical events as interpreted by the masterful satirical mind of Mel Brooks. The series itself is a sequel to Brooks' 1981 film “History of the World: Part I.” Hulu's series sees sketches that recreate moments from the American Civil War, The Russian Revolution, World War II, Mesoamerica, and more.

To build buzz around the series Hulu Originals launched an all-encompassing social campaign that established the series' identity through hilarious bite-sized cast introductions, teases of the sketches seen on the show, a “Binge It Your Way'' menu, clips of the outrageous musical numbers, and appearances from series stars Ike Barinholtz, Nick Kroll, and Wanda Sykes. The campaign was launched through Instagram and offered viewers a glimpse into the irreverent "History of the World, Part II,” promising laughs that are 'hysterically accurate.'

 

Strategy

The “History of the World, Part II” social campaign's parts worked as a cohesive whole, all designed to immersive audiences into Mel Brooks’ iconic world of irreverent humor. The Cast Social teaser introduced viewers to the primary cast of Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz, as well as the dozens of other familiar faces that guest starred during the four-night event. The Cast Hype teaser doubles down on these highlights, specifically the legendary Mel Brooks himself. The Now Streaming trailer includes light-hearted banter between the principal cast, and the specially crafted “Binge It Your Way” Menu was created for social media users as a quick guide to the many, many funny faces features in the series and the episodes that they appear in.

Overall, the campaign engaged viewers and fans with an appreciation for the humor and style of the source material and acted as an extension of its comedy and wit.

The day of it’s debut, “History of the World, Part II” became the most engaging Season 1 Hulu Original on TikTok in a year.

At the time of its release, March 6, 2023, the series’ social campaign garnered the most video views and engagements of any Hulu Original released in 2023.
