The Daily Show team, upon daily monitoring of the news, became increasingly concerned with Donald Trump’s rhetoric that mimicked Adolf Hitler. The team decided to create a social media video that very clearly showed our audience that Trump was stealing some of Hitler’s lines.
The video required weeks of deep research. We mined clips of Trump’s speeches on the campaign trail and juxtaposed them with quotes (and the original sources) from Hitler’s speeches and writing. Since we are a comedy show, and unfortunately, there is nothing particularly funny about this topic, we wrote Hitler’s quotes in Comic Sans typeface.
The video exploded on The Daily Show’s social media channels, with 16M views and nearly 2M engagements. Comments included concerned discussions about the rise of fascism throughout history, drawing comparisons between Nazi Germany and modern-day America.
