AIS Hub of E-Waste : Building a Greener Future Through Strategic Collaboration

Entered in Other Partnerships

Objective

The AIS Hub of E-Waste was developed to tackle Thailand’s escalating electronic waste crisis through an innovative brand partnership model. As the nation’s leading digital service provider, AIS took decisive action to create a sustainable, inclusive, and technology-driven solution that not only ensures proper e-waste disposal but also drives a long-term shift in public environmental responsibility.

Our core objective is to establish a nationwide, accessible, and trustworthy ecosystem for e-waste collection and recycling, leveraging AIS’s advanced digital infrastructure and strategic alliances with key stakeholders — including the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, certified recyclers such as WMS, Thailand Post Company Limited, and a broad network of over 250 partners nationwide.

The campaign specifically aims to:

Ultimately, this campaign demonstrates how strong public-private collaboration can scale impactful environmental change, positioning AIS as both a technology leader and a catalyst for sustainable progress in Thai society.

Strategy

AIS brought the “AIS Hub of E-Waste” campaign to life through an integrated strategy that blended technology, collaboration, and community engagement to create a nationwide, scalable solution for electronic waste management.

Strategic Framework

Understanding the barriers to proper e-waste disposal — including limited public awareness, inconvenient access, and lack of transparency — AIS structured the campaign around three pillars:

  1. Access: Make e-waste disposal simple and convenient through physical and digital infrastructure.
  2. Awareness: Educate the public on the dangers of improper e-waste handling.
  3. Accountability: Use blockchain to ensure transparency and build public trust.

Execution Plan

AIS rolled out more than 3,000 certified e-waste drop points across its retail stores, partner universities, communities, and Thailand Post locations. These were supported by the AIS E-Waste+ app, which helps users find drop points, learn about e-waste, and track the journey of their disposed items. Blockchain technology ensures traceability throughout the collection and recycling process — from deposit to certified, zero-landfill treatment.

The campaign incentivized behavior change through AIS Reward points, gamification features, and strategic use of green influencers to expand reach online. Education programs were also implemented in schools to promote long-term behavioral change among youth.

Expanding Partnership Ecosystem

A unique feature of the campaign was its ability to continually grow its network of partners — from government agencies to private sector companies and academic institutions. Beyond contributing infrastructure, these partners actively brought the campaign into their own organizations.

Many partner companies initiated internal engagement programs, installing drop bins at offices, running employee challenges, and launching e-waste awareness campaigns for their customers. This turned the AIS initiative into a shared mission that aligned with partners’ own environmental goals, while deepening engagement between partners and their employees and customers. This ripple effect significantly amplified the campaign’s impact and reach.

Challenges and Solutions

One major challenge was changing long-standing public habits regarding electronic waste. To overcome this, AIS made the process intuitive, rewarding, and trustworthy — aided by blockchain-backed transparency and strategic communications through credible channels. Another challenge was scalability. AIS addressed this by leveraging its robust digital infrastructure, national retail footprint, and expanding partner network.

What Makes It Unique

This is not a one-off CSR campaign — it is a systemic solution rooted in digital transformation and strategic partnerships. AIS Hub of E-Waste is one of the first public-private e-waste programs in Southeast Asia to:

Through this campaign, AIS has proven that technology and purposeful collaboration can empower everyday Thais to take part in solving one of the country’s most urgent environmental challenges.

Results

The AIS Hub of E-Waste has exceeded all expectations by igniting a nationwide movement that transforms how Thai people manage electronic waste. Our mission was clear: to make e-waste disposal simple, accessible, and engaging for everyone. With over 3,000 certified drop points established across the country, we removed key barriers and created an easy, effective pathway for public participation.

The results speak for themselves: over 1 million e-waste items have been responsibly collected and recycled, drastically reducing environmental hazards. Our partnership network has rapidly grown to include more than 250 government agencies, private companies, and educational institutions — many of which have embedded e-waste awareness into their ESG initiatives. This has amplified our impact, turning the campaign into a self-sustaining movement embraced by employees, customers, and communities nationwide.

Looking forward, AIS is extending this momentum beyond Thailand through a landmark regional collaboration with the Singtel Group. Together, we are replicating our proven model across Southeast Asia, strengthening cross-border efforts to champion responsible e-waste management and environmental stewardship.

Through continuous communication and strategic engagement, this campaign has redefined responsible e-waste disposal as a collective civic duty — empowering every Thai to contribute to a cleaner, greener future. AIS demonstrates that digital infrastructure, combined with purposeful partnerships, can spark meaningful environmental transformation on national and regional scales.
