Indigo Development and Entertainment Arts aims to entertain and excite the audience on Snapchat Originals with our third hit show on the platform since the launch in October 2018. Kappa Crypto is the unique story of a young sorority girl who uses her badass hacking skills to help the FBI. From writer Katherine Craft, Kappa Crypto keeps audiences laughing and guessing throughout the whole season. Throughout the 8 5-minute episodes, we see Maddie Sullivan school all the boys in her cryptography class, run against her sorority's mean girl, and try her best to play nice with the FBI. This show breaks down gender-norms and empowers an audience of young women to be themselves, whatever version of them that might be.
When making Kappa Crypto, we wanted to be mindful of the mobile platform and its young audience. With so many distractions that come from viewing on a second-screen, we had our work cut out for us to keep audiences engaged throughout. From shooting in vertical frame to bringing in recognizable influencer talent, the making of Kappa Crypto was anything but typical. Our team was led by two powerhouse women, writer/creator Katherine Craft and director Lilah Vandenburgh. Through their collective vision, we were able to shoot all 8 episodes in 12 days, in various locations around the greater Los Angeles area. From shooting on the Universal Lot, to a house in Sherman Oaks, our cast and crew were tested every day. We worked with a mix of young Hollywood talent that you may know from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Cobra Kai, as well as popular influencers like Kalen Allen and Rickey Thompson. Our diverse cast helped to bring in a variety of viewers all interested in hearing a unique and playful storyline.
The role that STEM plays in Kappa Crypto is a BIG one, and we wanted to celebrate the STEM aspirations of our lead, albeit her bubbly, sorority tendencies. Kappa Crypto shows young women that a path in STEM is a viable option, and one that you don't need to sacrifice your lip gloss for. The passion that Maddie Sullivan has for her studies, is only matched with her love for unicorns and her sorority sisters. Kappa Crypto proves that you don't need to pick one side of yourself to show the world.
Kappa Crypto is our fourth major show to be released on Snap Originals. When we set out to tell this unique story, we anticipated that it would largely resonate with female viewers. We were right! Since its launch in December 2018, Kappa Crypto has maintained an audience breakdown of ~70% female and ~30% male. This did not surprise us at all. We wanted to make sure we were giving our viewers a heartfelt and authentic story, a love-letter of sorts to all the women in STEM who are making our world more exciting and more advanced everyday.
